What’s to come for 2008

Many people are saying that 2007 was the greatest year for video games. You had Bioshock, Halo 3, Assassin’s Creed, The Orange Box, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, Playstation 3’s and Wii’s first full year on the market, and many more things that made it a great year. With 2007 in the past, we can now start looking ahead towards 2008 and what it has to bring us.

Let’s just take a look at some of those video games that were being talked about since the beginning of 2007, some even back in 2006.

  • Rainbow Six Vegas 2
The highly anticipated sequel to the winner of numerous awards, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will push the franchise to new heights by adding new gameplay features and even more stunning visuals. Players will encounter an intense solo campaign that uses new tactical possibilities in various locations around Sin City.

    • As expected with one of the pioneer franchises for online multiplayer Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will also break new ground in both co-op and adversarial modes, while providing unprecedented interaction between the solo and multiplayer modes.

  • Grand Theft Auto IV
GTA IV will reinvent the series with a renewed version of Liberty City detailed to the last pothole and rooftop vent. There are now five boroughs with so much realism it’ll feel like you are in the real New York City. With the ability to climb obstacles, drive cars, steer boats and pilot helicopters, the world of GTA is more accessible than ever before.

    • Expected to be the Best Game of 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV arrives in stores April 29th as one of the  most highly anticipated games since 2006…when it was announced.

  • Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway
Featuring unprecedented visuals and gameplay, Brothers in Arms Hell’s Highway drops you into the boots of a 101st Airborne paratrooper during Operation Market Garden, the largest Airborne operation of WWII.

    • It hasn’t gotten much attention lately, but we can expect it to pick up closer to the release of the game. Brothers in Arms is maybe the one good World War II series that keeps on coming. It is expected to hit US stores in June 2008.

  • Midnight Club: Los Angeles
From the makers of the widely popular Grand Theft Auto games, comes the next sequal in the Midnight Club racing series.

    • Race at breakneck speeds through the streets of modern-day L.A. recreated in stunning detail. Drive the hottest range of real-world tuners, muscle cars, exotics and superbikes on the streets today. Customize your ride with the best after-market performance parts and custom kits. Illegal street racing with no track, no load times, no rules: Welcome back to the Midnight Club.

  • Splinter Cell Conviction
You are a fugitive, ruthlessly hunted by the very government you used to serve. Your only choice is to improvise to survive.

    • Experience original gameplay based on improvisation in which your environment is your top weapon. Always on your toes, you need to react on the fly to any changing situations and use the environment and the crowds around you to create diversions and deter your enemies.
    • As a fugitive, quick thinking and adaptation are essential to turn the situation to your advantage. A gameplay experience delivering 100% adrenaline includes close combat and shooting sequences. To survive, build an underground network of allies who will help you obtain high-tech gadgets and stay one step ahead of your pursuers as you struggle to unmask the forces that frame you.

  • Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world. A power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela’s oil supply, sparking an invasion that turns the country into a warzone. But for you, international crisis is all upside: You are a mercenary, and you profit from chaos. These are world powers with deep pockets, deep grudges, and enough arms and ammo to start World War III. This is your kind of environment.

    • Originally set for a 2007 release, Mercenaries 2 is now expect to be released sometime in 2008. It was scheduled for a release this Spring, but now another delay has come along and we are saying it will be out in August 2008. This is a game that may very well challenge Grand Theft Auto IV for Best Game of ‘08.
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
The Star Wars saga will continue in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a videogame developed by LucasArts, which casts players as Darth Vader’s “Secret Apprentice” and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi – and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

    • The Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), by Pixelux Entertainment, and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. These new technologies create gameplay only possible on the new generation of consoles. As a revolutionary behavioral-simulation engine, euphoria enables interactive characters to move, act and even think like actual human beings, adapting their behavior on the fly and resulting in a different payoff every single time.

  • Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones returns for his most incredible interactive expedition ever. Set in 1939, this epic, original story — written for the first time under the direction of George Lucas — puts you in the fedora of the legendary adventure hero as he unravels the clues found in ancient artifacts spanning the globe.

    • Indiana Jones debuts the revolutionary new euphoria technology from NaturalMotion. This next-gen technology imbues Indy and his opponents with unparalleled environmental awareness and survival instincts. They’ll stumble, then attempt to maintain their balance; brace themselves for falls, then get back up; and reach for nearby ledges when falling. Each action results in an authentic, varied performance every time.

  • Saint’s Row 2
Probably going to be one of the most controversial games this year, Saint’s Row 2 will make its way to a simultaneous Playstation 3/Xbox 360 release in late 2008. Developed by THQ’s critically acclaimed internal studio Volition, Inc. using their proprietary open-world engine, Saints Row 2 will offer vastly expanded customization options, a totally transformed and expanded city of Stilwater, all new vehicles, sandbox tools and toys as well as both online co-op and competitive multiplayer. The Row returns in ‘08.
