In the News #48 – 3/17/2008

Daily News for March 17th, 2008.

  • Electronic Arts has a new president on their hands. According to MCV, John Pleasants has been named President and COO of Electronic Arts.
  • Activision has released details on the four new maps for Call of Duty 4 coming to Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network this spring. All four will be included in a single map pack. No specific date has been announced, but it will be in April for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
  • Ripten.com is reporting that Haze will remain a PS3 exclusive. According to the website, at a Play.com Live event in the UK, two Ubisoft representatives confirmed that they are not publishing a 360 version.
  • Prey 2 has been officially confirmed. There is no release date yet.
  • Nintendo of America announced on Monday that Super Smash Bros. Brawl is now officially the fastest-selling game in the company’s history. More than 1.4 million gamers have purchased the game since its release on March 9th. 874,000 people bought the game in its first day.

Daily News for March 13th, 2008.

  • Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg confirmed, “Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.” The rumors were wrong.
  • Capcom officially announced plans to release a two month long beta for Super Street Fighter II HD Turbo Remix. It will only be available through the Xbox Live Arcade.
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 group manager Aaron Greenberg said production is back on track for the console and that he expects console sales to back back in the coming months. The Playstation 3 is still likely to have outsold the Xbox 360 for the month of February.
  • The Playstation Store has been updated. Read the full list of details on IGN.
  • Team Fortress 2, Portal, and the Half-Life 2: Episode Pack will be available April 9th, 2008. They are all now stand-alone titles.
  • The Playstation 3 did indeed manage to outsell the Xbox 360 in the month of February. The PS3 was able to sell 280,000 as oppose to the 360’s 254,000. The DS came in first place with 587,000 units sold. The Wii came in second with 432,000 sold. Somehow, the Playstation 2 is still manage to outsell the PS3 and 360 to land in 3rd place with 351,000 units sold. The PSP was able to crawl into last place with 243,000 sales.
  • Call of Duty 4 managed to stay atop the charts for most units sold in February. It pulled in 296,000 new owners. Devil May Cry 4 came in second with 295,000.

  • Yesterday we reported on how Wii Ware is set for a March 25th release with 9 games being available at that time. Tetris has been announced for a Wii Ware appearance, but not until summer of this year. It will feature online multiplayer for up to six players.
  • Ouchide Mugen Puti Puti, a Japanese bubble wrap popping game, has also been announced for a Wii Ware release in Spring ’08 for 800 Wii points. 
  • Call of Duty 4 brings home the gold once again as last week’s Xbox Live most played game. Halo 3 came in second.
  • Bioshock 2 has been announced. Read More.
  • Mafia II is set for a release in Take-Two Interactive’s Fiscal 2009 year (November 1st, 2008 through October 31st, 2009.)

Weekly Review #3

Here’s our Weekly Review for the week of February 25th – February 29th, 2008.

  • Electronic Arts started off the week by offering to buy out Take-Two Interactive. It didn’t go so well. Read More.
  • Phil Harrison, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has announced that he is to be parting ways with the company after 15 years on the job. He retired on February 29th, 2008.
  • Microsoft has announced that they are completely shutting down their HD-DVD format. They will no longer build the add-on HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360, but will continue customer support on existing units.
  • Ubisoft made the announcement that Haze will be arriving on the Playstation 3 in May. Read and Watch More Here.
  • Metal Gear Solid 4 has been set for a June 12th, 2008 release. There will be a standard edition and an 80GB Playstation 3 MGS4 bundle. Read More Here and Here.
  • Bioware announced that Mass Effect will be coming to the PC on May 6th, 2008.
  • The DualShock 3 for the Playstation 3 (complete with rumble) will be released in North America in April 2008 for $54.99.
  • Call of Duty 4 has been patched for the Xbox 360. Additions like Host Migration, kill cams, and better sniper accuracy were some of the changes.

  • SCi Entertainment has announced that it will be cutting a quarter of its workforce, as well as cancelling 14 projects currently in development.
  • Capcom announced today that Rocketmen: Axis of Evil will be made available for purchase through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network on Wednesday, March 5th for Xbox Live and a day later on PSN. It is 800 Microsoft points or $9.99.
  • Call of Duty 4 has been patched for the Xbox 360. Additions like Host Migration, kill cams, and better sniper accuracy were some of the changes.

Weekly Review #1

We are now going to combine our Xbox, Nintendo, and Playstation Weekly Reviews together to form one Weekly Review. Here’s our Weekly Review for the week of February 11th – February 15th, 2008.

  • Now available on the Wii Virtual Console is Harvest Moon for Super NES, and Lords of Thunder for TG-16 CD. Both games were released for 800 points.
  • Electronic Arts Inc. and Maxis have announced that Spore, the highly anticipated game from the creators of The Sims, will be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7th, 2008. Spore will be available for the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS, and mobile phones. Go here to see IGN’s article which includes the Release Date Trailer.
  • 274,000 Wiis were bought in January.
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl was first place in sales again in its second week, having 251,789 copies sold, twice as many as the second place game. Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold one million copies faster than any Wii game before.
  • A multiplayer demo has been released for Frontlines: Fuel of War on Xbox Live. It allows up to 32 players for multiplayer combat.
  • Hironobu Sakaguchi’s newest RPG; Lost Odyssey is now exclusively available on the 360 console.
  • BioWare has announced Mass Effect for PC with added features including: High Resolution visuals, Fully customizable controls, Run and Gun control, new decryption mini-screen and new inventory screen GUI and functionality.

  • Sierra Entertainment has announced that World in Conflict will appear on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 systems this fall. Additional single player and multiplayer content is expected.
  • The Witcher has sold more than 600,000 copies world-wide.
  • A new report by warranty company SquareTrade indicates that the Xbox 360 has a failure rate of about 16.4 percent under normal usage conditions, a number lower by about half than some retailers have claimed but about four times higher than estimates Microsoft made last year. Read More on IGN.
  • Call of Duty 4 continues to surpass any other game on the market. The Xbox 360 version of the game alone sold more than 300,000 copies in just the month of January.
  • It’s hard to believe, but the Xbox 360 sold less copies than the Playstation 3 and Wii. 230,000 Xbox 360 consoles were bought in January, compared to 269,000 for the PlayStation 3 and 274,000 for the Nintendo Wii. On the portable side, 251,000 DS units were bought, and the PSP sold about the same amount of units as the 360.

  • Call of Duty 4 continues to control all that is Xbox Live. It stays on top as the most played Xbox Live title for last week, followed closely by Halo 3.
  • Meridian4 and Frozenbyte have announced that the single-player demo of Shadowgrounds Survivor is now available. The demo features 2 campaign mode levels and 1 survivor mode level to give players a taste of the action.
  • A new Lord of the Rings role-playing game, possibly titled The White Council, is in the making. Yesterday, the publisher of the game announced that they asked Pandemic to work on the new Rings title. Guess what, they accepted.
  • PlanetCommand&Conquer has revealed covers to two different magazines that are to be released next week that have Red Alert 3 on the front. Is this a confirmation of the game?
  • It’s not an officially official confirmation, but an ‘official’ confirmation of the discontinuation of the 80GB Playstation 3 has been released. Read More.
  • Dark Sector has been refused classification by the OFLC, Australia’s classification board. The Board described Dark Sector as a “violent and sometimes gruesome game with a sinister storyline and ominous outcome. The violence and aggression inflicted upon the protagonist is of a high level, naturalistic and not stylised at all.” Are we experiencing the Manhunt 2 incident all over again?

In the News #18 – 2/4/2008

Daily News for February 4th, 2008.

  • Electronic Arts has just released predicted hardware sales for the coming year, with the Xbox 360 predicted to sell between 6 to 8 million units in North America and Europe, while the PS3 is expected to sell 9.5 to 11.5 million units. Europe is where the majority sales will take place. Playstation 3 has a predicted 5 to 6 million units sales as opposed to the Xbox 360 with 1.5 to 2.5 million.  For handhelds, the DS has an estimated advantage over Sony’s PSP of around 8 million units. The Wii wins the estimate battle with 12 to 14 million.
  • Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced today that the total number of registered users for Folding@home has reached over one million users since PlayStation 3 started taking part in Stanford University’s Folding@home project back in March of 2007. On average, this is roughly 3,000 PS3 users registering for Folding@home per day or 2 new registered users every minute worldwide.
  • New downloadable multiplayer maps are on the way for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This will be the first downloadable content for CoD4. There is no release date other than Spring ’08, and it will be coming to both the Playstation Online Store and Xbox Live.
  • NVIDIA announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire AGEIA Technologies. The press release says more than 140 games that use AGEIA’s PhysX software are either shipping or in development for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC.
  • Gametap VP of Content and Creative Director Ricardo Sanchez announced today that Myst Online: Uru Live is going to be discontinued. According to Sanchez, the servers will continue to run for the next 60 days, after which time the world will be shut down.

Playstation Weekly Review #1

Playstation 2, PSP, and Playstation 3 Weekly Review for the week of January 21st, 2008 – January 25th, 2008.

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare apparently outsold Halo 3 for the most sells in 2007. It sold more than 7 million units
  • Rumors of a price drop for the Playstation 3 are circulating all over the net. The new price is set at $299 and is set to supposedly drop on January 29.  
  • Sony said on Wednesday it is delaying the planned introduction in late January of a Skype Web phone service for PlayStation Portable (PSP) users in Japan due to technical problems.  Sony’s game unit said earlier this month it would start offering Skype software for downloading onto the latest PSP model, enabling PSP Users to make free Web-based phone calls to other PSP users and to users of PCs equipped with Skype software. However, the game unit said on Wednesday a microphone it planned to start selling in Japan for the new service did not meet Skype specifications, forcing the delay
  • Filings at the Federal Communications Commission reveal that Sony will be releasing the Ceramic White PlayStation 3 in North America. Originally released in Japan in November, the 40 GB units comes with a white DualShock 3 controller and retails for JPY 39,980 in the region.
  • Haze has been delayed. The company expects the title to arrive during the 2008 fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009.
  • THQ’s recent financial report revealed Wednesday that upcoming videogame Frontlines: Fuel of War will not be coming to the PlayStation 3 after all.
  • The Juiced series and the Stuntman franchise, as well as the PS2 version of Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed have all also been cancelled.
  • According to a post on PS3fanboy.com, the 80 gig PlayStation 3 is being discontinued. The blog says: “an anonymous Best Buy employee has sent us a scan of an internal letter, which notifies employees that the 80GB system is being discontinued.”
    The letter reads:

    “The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won’t be replaced at this time…It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time.”

  • It looks as if God of War III won’t be out until atleast December 2009. The game will be in 1080p, and will feature Sixaxis and rumble support when it makes it’s next-generation debut.
