  • Square Enix announced today in Japan that the company is forming a Square Enix Mobile Studio, a fully owned subsidiary dedicated to the development and distribution of mobile contents. The studio is expect to open in April in Sapporo.
  • Paramount Pictures and Microsoft today announced a partnership that brings with it new content to Xbox Live, with Transformers the debut content. The blockbuster movie will be coming in both standard and high definition tomorrow to Xbox Live. Warner Bros. also has a similar deal with Microsoft lined up.

  • If you haven’t already heard, another development in the downfall of HD-DVD has emerged. Wal-Mart is going to cease all sales of HD-DVD and HD-DVD players by June. We only bring this up because Microsoft has responded to the HD-DVD troubles and how it might affect the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player sales:

    “We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace.”

  • A new and imroved version of The Witcher has been announced. The game has been dubbed the name The Witcher Enhanced Edition, original huh? It will arrive in May of this year.
  • THQ has just confirmed that its anticipated shooter Frontlines: Fuel of War will now support 50 players simultaneously on some US servers. This is up from the original 32 players, making Frontlines the game with the highest number of players supported in an online shooter over Xbox Live.

Weekly Review #1

We are now going to combine our Xbox, Nintendo, and Playstation Weekly Reviews together to form one Weekly Review. Here’s our Weekly Review for the week of February 11th – February 15th, 2008.

  • Now available on the Wii Virtual Console is Harvest Moon for Super NES, and Lords of Thunder for TG-16 CD. Both games were released for 800 points.
  • Electronic Arts Inc. and Maxis have announced that Spore, the highly anticipated game from the creators of The Sims, will be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7th, 2008.   • 274,000 Wiis were bought in January.
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl was first place in sales again in its second week, having 251,789 copies sold, twice as many as the second place game. Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold one million copies faster than any Wii game before.
  • A multiplayer demo has been released for Frontlines: Fuel of War on Xbox Live. It allows up to 32 players for multiplayer combat.
  • Hironobu Sakaguchi’s newest RPG; Lost Odyssey is now exclusively available on the 360 console.
  • BioWare has announced Mass Effect for PC with added features including: High Resolution visuals, Fully customizable controls, Run and Gun control, new decryption mini-screen and new inventory screen GUI and functionality.

  • Sierra Entertainment has announced that World in Conflict will appear on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 systems this fall. Additional single player and multiplayer content is expected.
  • The Witcher has sold more than 600,000 copies world-wide.
  • A new report by warranty company SquareTrade indicates that the Xbox 360 has a failure rate of about 16.4 percent under normal usage conditions, a number lower by about half than some retailers have claimed but about four times higher than estimates Microsoft made last year. Read More on IGN.
  • Call of Duty 4 continues to surpass any other game on the market. The Xbox 360 version of the game alone sold more than 300,000 copies in just the month of January.
  • It’s hard to believe, but the Xbox 360 sold less copies than the Playstation 3 and Wii. 230,000 Xbox 360 consoles were bought in January, compared to 269,000 for the PlayStation 3 and 274,000 for the Nintendo Wii. On the portable side, 251,000 DS units were bought, and the PSP sold about the same amount of units as the 360.

  • Makers of the hit series Major League Baseball 2K announced new content and features to be on Major League Baseball 2K8, saying it’ll be more realistic mechanically speaking. The new features include, but are not limited to: Total Pitch control, Swing Stick 2.0, All-New Base-running, Precision Throw Control, Full Minor Leagues, and two of the best commentators in the business- Jon Miller and Joe Morgan. This game’s got some high expectations following it in its’ path!

  • Age of Conan has been censored in Germany according to Funcom, developer of the game. Other European territories, along with the United States, get a full version with enhanced dismemberment, decapitation, over-the-top kills, and nipples. Yes, that’s right…nipples. More than 500,000 people have already signed up to join the Age of Conan community.
  • The first set of downloadable content has been announced for Mass Effect. The pack is called Bring Down the Sky and is scheduled for a release on March 10 at 2AM PST for 400 Microsoft Points (US $5.)
  • Ubisoft announced today that Assassin’s Creed is coming to PC at the end of March. This version of the game is called “Assassin’s Creed, Director’s cut edition” and will feature four brand new exclusive types of investigations.
  • A recent news letter sent out by ESRB states that only 6% of the 1,563 games released last year were rated M for Mature. Nearly 60% were rated E for Everyone.

  • The HD-DVD player add-on for the Xbox 360 has had a price drop of $50.00. It can now be bought for $129.00 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • Medal of Honor Heroes 2 may not have multiplayer after all. This feature has apparently been taken out of the game. More details are sure to come soon.

Xbox Weekly Review #2

Xbox 360 Weekly Review for the week of January 28th, 2008 – February 1st, 2008. 

  • The Turok demo for North America’s Xbox Live has finally arrived. The demo was released on the Playstation Network and other Xbox Live regions about 2 weeks ago.
  • Ubisoft announced today the release of the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter® 2 Co-op Collection. This download is a new downloadable content (DLC) package for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for the Xbox 360. It is now available on Xbox Live. Read more about the details on IGN.
  • A rumor that was crushed earlier today was that Halo Wars was going to have a port on the PC from the already scheduled Xbox 360 version. This is in fact just a rumor, and Microsoft has confirmed that there is no PC version in development. It is still an Xbox 360 exclusive.
  • A Conflict: Denied Ops demo is now available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

CES Video Game Update

  • Earlier today, we reported about how Microsoft is considering adding Blu-Ray support. This is a report that came from CES, so we will go ahead and post it here.
  • Are you a person that owns the Playstation 3 versions of Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3? Do you keep forgetting which guitar goes to which game? If you answered yes to one, or for that matter none, then this guitar is right for you. In March, Nyko will be releasing the “Front Man,” a wireless controller for PS3 that is compatible with both GH3 and Rock Band. You can play up to 80 hours on batteries wirelessly, and can easily switch between GH3 and Rock Band with the flick of a switch.
  • In an update coming later this year, PS3 owners will be able to automatically make a lower quality version of any High Def Blu-Ray movie in their library and save it to PSP or Memory stick. Watching a movie on your memory stick, rather than a UMD, actually saves battery life.
  • It has been confirmed that the PSP is getting a camera and GPS, but it is now confirmed that it’s also getting a keyboard. The camera and GPS should be available by the end of this year. The keyboard is scheduled for sometime in 2009.
  • The may perhaps by the ‘big news’ that was supposed to be released during Microsoft’s Keynote; but ABC Television Group and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. will be offering U.S. Xbox LIVE members entertainment content via the Xbox LIVE Marketplace Video Store, some of which will be in High-Definition.
  • British Telecom will begin selling Xbox 360s that will run Mediaroom in the UK only.
  • The Tech Emmys took place recently at CES. Nintendo wins for the 2nd year in a row, this time for “Excellence in Engineering Creativity.” The rest of the winners are below:
