In the News #57 – 3/28/2008

Daily News for March 28th, 2008.

  • The Playstation Network has been hacked. Sony made an announcement on their Playstation website that someone had hacked into the Playstation Store and possibly into users’ accounts. Sony was able to take immediate action and it looks as if the hackers did not obtain any credit card information. Read more on the Playstation Website.
  • Xbox Live will be experiencing some downtime on April 1st for scheduled upgrade. It will take 3 hours to complete starting at 2am PST.
  • Is the next Mortal Kombat on the way? Just take a look at The website is registered to Ed Boon (creative director of the Mortal Kombat) and Midway Games. Right now, the site features a countdown timer which ends in a little less than 20 days and promisses “Answers.” Underneath the countdown timer are 4 pictures of animals.
    • One IGN user, tmeadows34, pointed out that the 4 animals are: Rhino, Anteater, Gorilla, Elephant. If you take the letter at the beginning of each animal’s name, it spells out “R.A.G.E.” Could the new Mortal Kombat be using the RAGE engine to build the game? Only time will tell.

  • Remember Yakuza, an (not very) old PS2 game? Well the sequel, Yakuza 2, has been announced for a release in Europe. It’s coming out sometime in 2008.
  • That Resident Evil 5 footage that we (reported on?) has been released on a DVD in the latest issue of Famitsu. Rather than a new trailer, the DVD contains off-screen footage of the game being played in the background of an interview with producer Jun Takeuchi. A video of the developement tools used to the create the game is also on the DVD.
  • Ubisoft has announced a special Xbox Live High Stakes entertainment weekend for Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Friday, March 28th, fans atleast 18 years old will be able to participate in a variety of online events including a 72-hour Play & Win Sweepstakes where every hour a player will be awarded with special prize packages. A Grand Prize of an autographed Xbox 360 Elite signed by the Montreal Development Team and 12 months of Xbox Live Gold will be awarded to the top Rainbow Six player over the 72 hour period.
  • Ubisoft also announced a new map for Rainbow Six Vegas 2 that is only available at Gamestop stores and This map is sponsored by Comcast, hince the name of the map, “Comcast Optimized Major League Gaming Map.” Go to IGN to read more.
  • It looks like Gran Turismo 5 won’t be coming out until sometime in 2009. According to a response to a comment made on the PlayStation.Blog by producer Chris Hinojosa-Miranda, “GT5 is still about a year away. You should just decide now to buy it, enjoy it, go online and race against anyone and everyone, rank number one worldwide, get the girl (or guy) and become the most popular kid in town. The end.”
  • A new Team Fortress 2 PC update is coming next month, including new maps.

  • GTA IV has been rated “M” in the USA by the ESRB. Haha. Grand Theft Auto IV has been rated Mature for: Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, Blood, and Intense Violence. Ahh, the perfect game.
  • Guitar Hero is finally making it’s way to the Nintendo DS. The console spinoff has been cleverly named Guitar Hero: On Tour. IGN has all the details.
  • Microsoft announced today that three new maps and an update for the Forge are on the way for Halo 3 on April 15th. The new maps are: Ghost Town, Avalanche and a third, unannounced location. The Legendary Map pack will cost you 800 Microsoft Points (US $10) from the Xbox Live Marketplace..
  • The Sims 3 has been announced for a 2009 release. The announcement comes from the unveiling of the official website, which can be found right here.

Daily News for March 13th, 2008.

  • Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg confirmed, “Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.” The rumors were wrong.
  • Capcom officially announced plans to release a two month long beta for Super Street Fighter II HD Turbo Remix. It will only be available through the Xbox Live Arcade.
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 group manager Aaron Greenberg said production is back on track for the console and that he expects console sales to back back in the coming months. The Playstation 3 is still likely to have outsold the Xbox 360 for the month of February.
  • The Playstation Store has been updated. Read the full list of details on IGN.
  • Team Fortress 2, Portal, and the Half-Life 2: Episode Pack will be available April 9th, 2008. They are all now stand-alone titles.
  • The Playstation 3 did indeed manage to outsell the Xbox 360 in the month of February. The PS3 was able to sell 280,000 as oppose to the 360’s 254,000. The DS came in first place with 587,000 units sold. The Wii came in second with 432,000 sold. Somehow, the Playstation 2 is still manage to outsell the PS3 and 360 to land in 3rd place with 351,000 units sold. The PSP was able to crawl into last place with 243,000 sales.
  • Call of Duty 4 managed to stay atop the charts for most units sold in February. It pulled in 296,000 new owners. Devil May Cry 4 came in second with 295,000.

  • Yesterday we reported on how Wii Ware is set for a March 25th release with 9 games being available at that time. Tetris has been announced for a Wii Ware appearance, but not until summer of this year. It will feature online multiplayer for up to six players.
  • Ouchide Mugen Puti Puti, a Japanese bubble wrap popping game, has also been announced for a Wii Ware release in Spring ’08 for 800 Wii points. 
  • Call of Duty 4 brings home the gold once again as last week’s Xbox Live most played game. Halo 3 came in second.
  • Bioshock 2 has been announced. Read More.
  • Mafia II is set for a release in Take-Two Interactive’s Fiscal 2009 year (November 1st, 2008 through October 31st, 2009.)

UPDATE: If you couldn’t figure it out on your own, we meant to say that the price of the Xbox 360 has dropped in the UK. That is why the prices are in pounds.

Daily News for March 10th, 2008.

  • Microsoft has slashed the price of Xbox 360, cutting the estimated retail price for the Arcade pack by £40, to £159.99. The Premium pack, which includes a 20GB hard drive and a wireless controller, has had its price cut by £50 to £199, while the Xbox 360 Elite will retail for £259.99 which is down £40.
  • Guess what, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is now available in a store near you.
  • The first downloadbale content pack for Mass Effect, Bring Down the Sky, is now available on Xbox Live. The pack adds around 90 minutes of gameplay. It can yours for 400 Microsoft Points.
  • Wii Ware has been set for a March 25th, 2008 release for Japan. If you want, take a look at the nine games that will be downloadable on that day. But it doesn’t really matter for most of us since we don’t live in Japan.
  • Apparently G4TV’s The Feed has done a little research. A recent post is stating the fact that Portal has received over 100 awards this year. 50 of the awards were game of the year awards, and the other 50 or so were overall special achievement awards. Ya done good Portal, ya done good.

  • Microsoft is reportedly in talks with Sony about adding Blu-Ray support for their products. Whether this means Blu-Ray support for the Xbox 360 is still unknown.
  • Rockstar Games is well aware that Bully: Scholarship Edition is freezing up at times for some players. They plan on releasing a title update through Xbox Live that will fix the problem. When Sam Houser, president of Rockstar Games, was asked about the problem, he said “It appears that some older 360s are experiencing framerate issues, freezes and other problems.”
  • 2K Sports today announced a free demo of Major League Baseball 2K8 is now available for download through Xbox Live Marketplace.
  • Details of The Sims 3 has arrived early. A 12-page World Exclusive First Look preview was released in the April/May issue of Games for Windows magazine. More details to come.

  • In celebration of the release of Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition 2008, a major party is going down in New York City on March 11th. The #1 Guitar Hero player, Chris Chike, aka “iamchris4life,” will attempt to set a new record for highest score in Single Player. More information on this event can be found in the Comment Section of this post.
  • Damnation, a new shooter game brought to you by Blue Omega Entertainment, is coming to the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC in late 2008.
  • New Guitar Hero III tracks are now available on Xbox Live and the Playstation Store. A free track will also be available for download on St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Halo 3 has been updated. Several glitches have been fixed, along with a new event being announced. Double XP is a weekend event where players can earn double the points for winning teams. This event only takes place for the next two weekends.
  • The newest Crysis patch, 1.2, is now available. It has made improvements to multiplayer, mod support, and balance of weapons, AI and vehicles.
  • Valve has recently announced that it would release Half Life 2: Episode I/II, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 as individual boxes at retail outlets. Portal will cost $19.99, while Team Fortress 2, and Episodes I/II will both retail for $29.99.

  • “Don’t Speak,” “Excuse Me Mr.,” and “Sunday Morning,”  from No Doubt’s hit album Tragic Kingdom are available now on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Store for Guitar Hero III track list.
  • The Wii came out the big winner over in Japan between January 28th and February 24th. The Wii sold 332,000 units to be the best selling console in that time period, with second place being the DS, with 230,000 units sold. PS3 managed to sell 89,000 units over the period, with the Xbox 360 selling 14,000 units.
  • Earlier this week, we covered the story of Metal Gear Solid 4 getting its own Playstation 3 bundle to be released sometime in June. We speculated that it would probably be June 12th. We now official word that the exact release date is June 12th, 2008.

  • GDC 08: The inaugural Xbox Live Arcade Awards has revealed the results of the best games that over 26,000 members voted on. Read more on IGN.
  • Video games and comic books really do have something in common….they will both be appearing at WonderCon ’08. Major video game companies like Electronic Arts, Capcom, Ubisoft, and several other, are all making an appearance at WonderCon. Read More on the official WonderCon ’08 site.
  • GDC 08: During a session called “Planning the Wii Menu” today, Nintendo’s Takashi Aoyama announced a new Pay to Play program for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. NWFC will remain a free service, but these new experiences will require users to pay a fee to enjoy. These services will fall under the new NWFC: Pay to Play program. No real details have been announced as of yet.
  • It just won’t stop. Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold 141,544 units between February 11th and February 17th in Japan, selling more 1.2 million units total since its January 31st release.
